なんちゃってミシガン -my life in Michigan-

ドライブスルーは便利なのか？ 2008年 04月 09日

ミシガンにきてびっくりしたことはたくさんあるが、その中の１つは、太っている人が非常に多い!
そしてその原因は、いろんなところに見つかる。
もちろん、食べ物がその原因の1つであるのは当たり前だけど、もう1つの大きな理由は交通手段が車しかないこと！ここでは誰も道を歩けません。なので運動不足のため太ってしまうのだと思う。
When I first came to Michigan, There were so many surprising things. One of
them was that there are a lot of overweight people. There are several reasons for that.
Of course, one of them is food, but another big reason is that people get
around only by cars. Most people cannot walk on the road, so I think they
become overweight from a lack of exercise.

自転車も趣味で公園でマウンテンバイクを走らせることはできるけど、移動手段としては使えません。
毎日の生活で、ちょっとその辺に行くのも車。向かいのポストに手紙出しに行く車。完全な車の街です。デトロイトは自動車メーカーが多いから、わざと公共交通機関は作っていないそうだ。道に歩道が殆どないから歩けない。自転車も然り。
車の方が歩行者に慣れてないから、もし人が歩いてたとしたら「ひかれても知らないよー」って感じになるのかも・・・
We can ride mountain bikes in the parks as our hobby but cannot use them for transportation. In the daily lives, even when our destination is very close, we
use cars.
Even when we mail a letter across the street, we also go there by cars.
This city is completely “The City of Cars.” There is no public transportation,
because there are a lot of automobile companies in Detroit, so the government does not make public transportation more than needs. Roads do not have side walk,　so we cannot walk or use bicycles. Drivers do not get used to
pedestrians, so if people walk on the road, drivers might feel
“You’ll get no sympathy from me if you get hit by a car…

そして、その上私がびっくりしたのが、ドライブスルーが超―――多いこと！！
日本のドライブスルーって、普通はファーストフードだけじゃんねー。
もちろんここでも殆どファーストフードはドライブスルー付きだよ。
でもそれ以外のドライブスルーを紹介。
Moreover, I was very surprised how many drive- thru there are!
As you know in Japan, only fast food restaurants have drive-thru.
Of course, fast food restaurants in Michigan have them. In addition,
I would like to tell you about various drive-thrus.

酒屋のドライブスルーがあるってのも聞いたことがある
驚くことに、「ドライブスルーインフルエンザの予防接種」なんてのもあった(；一_一)
要するに、ミシガンは非常に便利にできていて、車から降りなくてもできることがめちゃ多い。。。だからここに住む人はずっと車から降りなくても用が足りるのです。そりゃ太るわ。
I heard there is liquor shop’s drive-thru.
Surprisingly, there is a drive-thru window for FLU SHOT.
Gradually, like in Michigan has become too convenient, everything can be done at a drive-thru window.
So, people can stay in their car all the time. Therefore, many people are
overweight.

この町で太ってしまう理由はこれ以外にもあるので、また別の機会にご紹介します。ちなみに私は、今、生きてて最高の体重を更新中です
Outside of this reason, there are many other reasons that people in the city
become overweight, so I will tell you at another time.
Anyway, I am also heavier than I have ever been in my life.

スポーツバーに飲みに行きました 2008年 04月 05日

アメリカのスポーツバーに行きました。スーさんの会社の中国からの出張者の人と一緒に食事する機会があり、「よりアメリカチックなところで食事したい」という希望からです。
行ったら、土曜の夜だったしすごーい混んでいた。30分待ち。でも活気があって逆にいい感じでした。
I went to an American Sports Bar in Michigan.
I had an opportunity to have dinner with people who had just come from a business
trip from the Chinese branch of Su-san’s company.
They wanted to have dinner at a more Americanized restaurant!
So we went to that one. When we arrived, that restaurant was so crowded,
because it was Saturday night. We had to wait about 30 minutes.
It seemed more exciting than usual, so we felt good!

どれもこれもでかーい。実はこの上さらにもう1つオーダーしていたので、テーブルには載らず、頑張ってスペース作らないといけなかった。。。。
もちろん殆ど食べきりました。私たちはよう食べますわ・・・
All of the food potions were very huge!! Actually, we ordered one more meal, so we
didn’t enough room, so we had to try to make more room. And despite the amounts
of food, we ate everything. As you know, we always eat a lot!

バーはたくさんあります。この辺りでは、一番大量のアメリカ人を目にできるところかも。
普段は車生活なので、そんなに近くでたくさんのアメリカ人に合うチャンスないんだよね。バーでアメリカ人は、食事もガッツリ食べるし、そんなに何杯も飲まないから、酔っ払っている人もいないし、陽気におしゃべりに花を咲かせている感じ。
日本とはちょっと違う飲み方だと思う。日本人は居酒屋で、チビチビ長～くお酒を飲んで話してる感じだよねー。
ま、私は日本の居酒屋飲みも好きですが。。。
There are a lot of bars near here. They are the places where I can see many
American people. We usually go everywhere by cars, so we don’t have many
chances to get close to Americans.
In the bar, the American people ate a lot, and they didn’t drink too much, so nobody
got drunk. It seemed everybody was chatting and having a good time.
It is different from how we drink in Japan. At the bars in Japan are called Izakayas,
Japanese people sip alcohol and chat for a long time, don’t they?
As you know, I don’t mind Japanese style either.（*^_^*）.

中国からのお客さんも喜んでくれていた様子。多少時差ボケでツラそうにも見えたが。。。
ということで、バーは楽しかったので、また行くことにしようー。
It seemed the guests from China ware very happy, but they may have had a bit of jet lag….
Anyway, I had a good time at the bar, so, I will go again.

通ってる学校（その２） 2008年 04月 01日

本日は厳しい方の学校を紹介することにしよう。
Today, let me tell you about more strict school than the one I introduced
before.

前回同様、私は英語ＥＳＬのクラスを取っています。
こちらは単位をとる結構本格的なカレッジで専門学校みたいな感じです。
たくさんのアメリカ人も通っています。
英語のクラスには3科目あり、その中の「スピーキング（話す）」クラスです。
その他に「文法とリスニング（聞く）」「ライティング、リーディング（読み書き）」と言うクラスもあります。
I am also taking the ESL class as well as the class at school I introduced before.
This college is a serious college in which students can take credits. That is like a Japanese academy.
There are 3classes in ESL area, and I am taking “Speaking” class.
The others are “Grammar and Listening” and “Writing and Reading”.


「読み書き」とは、本を読んで感想文を書いたり、自らエッセイを書くクラス。
前回まではこの「読み書き」クラスに入ってましたが、あまりに難しく、
多分私にエッセイを書くセンスもなく、
挙句の果て、スーさんにあたりまくるという結果になったので、
今学期は気分一新、話す方のクラスにしました。
日本語でも、読み書きだめなのよねー。
ご存じの通り、人の話も聞かないからリスニングもダメ。
喋りまくる方だけが得意。私はよう喋る。
・・・がそれも日本語の場合のみ。英語だと無口・・・
“Writing and Reading” class is to learn how to write an essay and how to read books faster. Actually, I was taking “Writing and Reading” class last semester, and that class was very hard for me. In addition, I probably do not have a sense of writing essay (+o+). Eventually, I vented my frustration on Su-san, so I took Speaking class to feel refreshed. I am not good at writing and reading even using Japanese.
As you know, I do not a lack of ability to listen. I am good at speaking.
I become talkative when I use Japanese. When I use English, I am so　quiet!!

この学校は、超学術的な教え方をするので、今のしゃべるクラスも、単に会話するクラスとかではないです。
ひたすら、発音やイントネーションを学び、時々プレゼンとテストをその中に盛り込んだ感じ。
そして、5月のあたまから始まる次の学期の申し込みがもう始まっています。次はどの科目にしようかなあ。。。
This school gives us academic knowledge, so my current speaking class is not just a conversation lesson.
It focuses on pronunciation and intonation, and sometimes students give presentations and take exams.
The registration for next semester starts in the beginning of May. I wonder which class I will take next semester….

通っている学校（その１） 2008年 03月 27日

私の生活と言って忘れてはいけないのは学校です。今現在2つの学校に通っています。
どっちの学校も今学期は4月末で終わり。早く終わってほしー。
ということで、今日はそのうちの1つを紹介することにしよう
The thing that I do not forget in my Michigan life is the college. I am going to two schools now.This semester of both schools will be finished in April. I hope they finish earlier… Anyway, let me tell you about one of those schools.

私はここでESLという[英語]のクラスをとってます。ちなみにESL「第2言語としての英語」と言う意味。
もちろん「英語」のクラスに英語が母国語の生徒はいません。なーのーにー、みんな英語話すのうまいんだよねー。なんで学校通ってるの？って感じ。
でも、文法は苦手みたいだ。日本人、文法は得意でも、ホント話すのはダメ。日本人の学生時代の英語教育が間違っているのだろう。私も文法できなくても、話ができるようになりたいわ。
I am taking an English class called ESL now. ESL means English as a second language. Of course, all students are non-native English speakers. But, most classmates speak English very well, don’t they?
I sometimes feel “why do they need to study English?” But, it seems they are not good at grammar. Although Japanese are good at it, they are not good at speaking English. I think that we might have the wrong way about English education in Japan when we are students.
I hope I speak fluently even though I cannot understand the grammar.

たくさんのアメリカ人生徒いて、も、いろんなクラスに通ってます。例えば会計、調理師とか・・・私は実は、この学校の歌のクラス（コーラスではなくてバンドのボーカルみたいなクラス）に前学期思いきって申し込みをしたのだが、なんと人数不足で開講されなかった。。。歌が上手くなる＆アメリカ人の友達できる＆英語も上達できるかも。。。と思ったのになあ。。。
Many American students are going to various classes, such as accounting,
culinary etc…
Actually, I got up the courage to regist the vocal class the last semester.
Unfortunately, the course wasn’t open because of a lack of students.
I wish I would sing a song very much, make American friends,
and improve my English skills in the vocal class…

毎週火曜木曜の6pm～9pm。クラスは5レベルあって、最初にクラス分けテストを受けて自分の適したクラスに振り分けられます。テストを受けて私は3のクラスから始めることになりました。意外によかった！！
クラスメートの数は20人ぐらいそのうち日本人は3人。先生も優しくて、非常に和気あいあいとしています。
I go to this class every Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 9pm, and there are five levels in the ESL.
After students take a placement test before the class is started, each person is placed in their suitable level.
Therefore, I started the third level. It was better than I expected! There are around 20 students in my class, and three of them are Japanese.
The teacher is very kind, and the atmosphere is very cozy.

次回の日記では、もう1つの学校を紹介します。。。
I would like to tell you about the other one.

今年初の打ちっぱなし 2008年 03月 24日

昨日は「イースター」というアメリカの祝日（日曜なので元々休みだけど）で
いろんなお店は閉まってました。
スーパーでさえ閉まるんだから、結構不便。
日本だと休みの日はかきいれ時だから、逆に休みにはならないのにね。
There was an American holiday called Easter Sunday, Sunday is usually a day off, so a lot of stores were closed.
Since some supermarkets were even closed, I feel it was very inconvenient.
Holidays can make more money than weekdays in Japan, so the shops do not have a day off on those days.

そんな中、
「打ちっぱなし場は6時まであいている」という情報をもとに
行ってきました、今年初の打ちっぱなし。
In this situation, I got information that the golf driving range would be open until 6pm,
so we went there.It was my first time to practice golfing this year.

ミシガン、もちろん冬はゴルフ場はすべてクローズ（雪のため）
ちなみに今もクローズ中。
打ちっぱなしも、暖房設備、屋根などが完備されているところのみ、冬場もやってます。
が、普通あまり行きません。
だっていくら暖房があっても寒いもん！！
Most golf courses are closed in Michigan's winter because of snow.
For your information,they are closed now.
Some golf ranges that have a roof and heating equipment are only open in winter. But, people do not go there, because they are so COLD, no matter how much heating
equipment they have!!

前置き長くなりましたが、とにかく行きました。
こんな感じ。
Anyway, I went to the golf range.
It is like this.

久しぶりの割には、調子良かった。
しかし、コースに出ると、いつもめちゃめちゃなんだよなー。
というか、課題はパター＆バンカーなので、
パター練習場に行ったら、こちらは雪でまだやってなかった。
そりゃそうだわね。
Despite not trying for a long time, my golf condition was better than I expected.
But,whenever I play golf on a golf course, my golf is always so terrible!!
Especially, my golf problems are putting and bunker, so I went to the putting range.
But, it was closed due to snow... Of course,it was...

アメリカの家はやっぱ広い！ 2008年 03月 24日

昨日は家の外観だけの写真でしたが
うちのアパート結構広く、そして、日本人率もすごい高いです。
多分、日系企業が紹介しているアパートだと思う。
There was a picture of only the building facade on the last page of the diary. My
apartment complex is very huge, and so many Japanese are living here, because
this is probably the apartment complex that some Japanese companies
recommended.

私はこのアパート内に、知り合いはほとんどいないけど
朝夕の学校のバスが来るころは
日本人の奥様達が、外で毎日井戸端会議しています（*^_^*）
I have few friends in my apartment complex, but many Japanese wives are chatting
happily when a school bus comes every morning and afternoon.

家具は引っ越しする人から安く買った。
この部屋20畳ぐらいあるかも。広いよねー。アメリカの家って感じ。
This is my living room, and I got this funiture from someone who already went back to Japan.
The space of this room is around a 20-mat-room. It is very wide, isn't it?
It is like an American house!

仕様は3LDKだけど、2人だと広すぎるので、1つの部屋は閉じたまま使ってません。
完璧にお客様用。
今年は、家族や友達が遊びに来てくれる予定なので
この部屋を使う機会があるでしょう。
良かったなー。
My house is three bedrooms, but it is too large for us, so we do not use one of these
rooms. This will be just for guests.
My friends and families in Japan will visit Michigan this year, so this room will be used at that time.
I am very HAPPY!

しかし、日本に帰ったら、自分の家が狭く感じるんだろうねー
Unfortunately, I feel that my house in Japan will seem too narrow when I go back
to Japan...

まだ降るか・・・ 2008年 03月 23日

やっぱり、生活の紹介と言うとはじめは、気候ネタでしょー。
ミシガンの冬、寒いです。。。
私にとって、初めてのミシガンの冬なので少々ヘコみました。。。
最高気温がマイナス20度なんて時もありましたよ。
Speaking of introduction of life, the best topic is about weather, isn't it?
Michigan's winter is really cold...
This winter was the first time for me, so I felt a bit down...
You know, there was a day that the highest temperture was about minus 20 degrees
Celsius this winter.

で、３月も下旬になり、そろそろ暖かくなってきたかなー。と思った今日この頃。。。
だったのに・・・
昨日の晩また雪だよ雪。
Anyway, in late March, we thought it was becoming warm, BUT....
It was snowy last night!!



もってきたオシャレな靴は、ぜーんぶしまいこんで、結局雪対応の１足だけで過ごしたこの冬。
ま、安上がりっちゃあ安上がりだが、
このままオシャレ感覚がなくなって行くのが怖い今日この頃・・・
I stores away all the shoes I brought from Japan, and I kept only one pair of shoes
which are snow-compliant during this winter.
I could get a way with that...BUT
I am afreid that I will feel less fashionable every day...
