なんちゃってミシガン -my life in Michigan-

大不況の2008年 2008年 12月 30日

多くの国が、現在の世界恐慌に悩まされています。ご存知の通り、「BIG3」と呼ばれているアメリカの主要な自動車会社3社は今のも破産しそうです。これも知ってると思うけど、BIG3の本社はいずれもデトロイト付近にあります。聞くところによると、デトロイトの失業率は少なくとも10％、一部も地域ではなんと、24％に到達したとのこと。私が住んでいる郊外はそれほどまでではないけれと、事態は完全に変化しました。日本からの転勤者で何人かの人たちは、当初の期限より早く日本にかえらないといけなくなっている模様。

Many countries are struggling with global depression these days. As you know, the American major automobile companies called “Big 3” are on the verge of bankruptcy. As you also know, the Big 3 headquarters are located in the Detroit area. I heard that the jobless rate in Detroit was at least 10% now. Surprisingly, it seems to be reaching about 24% in some areas. The suburb I live in hasn’t increased so much, but the situation here has totally changed. Some Japanese workers who had transferred from Japan have to go back to Japan earlier than their initial period.


政府は先日、BIG3に支援金を出すことを決定したけど、この支援金もほんの一時しのぎのものだと思います。BIG3はこのお金をいかに効果的に使い、いかに早急に復興するかの策を考えないといけない。もし、アメリカという国が破産したら、世界全体が破壊するかもしれない。世界全体の破産って考えられる？

The government made a decision to give relief funds to Big 3 the other day; however, the relief funds are only a band-aid solution. The Big 3 have to consider how to spend this money effectively and how to reconstruct immediately.
If America goes bankrupt, then whole world may be destroyed. Can you believe whole world could be bankrupt?


私たちが今できることって何かしら？各自が限られた資源を効果的に利用する策を考えないといけないと思います。それと、世界各国がその国の資金をより効果的に使う策を考えるべきだと思います。

Is there anything we can do now? Each person has to think about the effective utilization of limited sources. All the world’s governments should discuss the way utilizing their funds more effectively.

私は今からどのぐらいこのアメリカにすむのかよくわからないけど、このとても厳しい状況の中ミシガンに住んでいることは価値があることだと思います。私は働きながら学校も行っていて、いろんな場所でたくさんの経験をすることできていることは、私にとってとても意味がある。時間とお金の無駄遣いにならないようなミシガンでの生活をしないといけないなあ・・・

I am not sure how long I will be in the US from now; however, staying in Michigan during such terrible situation will be of value for me. I am going to school while working, so I can have a lot of experiences at many different places. It is a meaningful experience for me. I should spend my life in Michigan not to waste time and money.

毎日毎日Xmasパーティー 2008年 12月 23日

先週は4回クリスマスパーティをしました。
I had 4 Xmas parties last week.




1つ目はうちの家で学校の友達と一緒に。みんな日本人です。話題は、英語スキルの話とか次の勉強のプランとか。旦那の転勤という同じ理由でミシガンに住んでいる友達なので、英語に関する心配事とかをよく話するし、同じ視点から励ましあったりしてます。もちろん、こんなまじめな話ばっかりじゃなくて、面白話もするけどね。
The first one was with my school friends at me house. They were all Japanese. We talked about our English skills and our next plans to learn English. We all live in Michigan and have the same visa status which means we are here with our husbands who transferred from Japan, so we often discuss any English concerns and encourage each other from the same perspective. Of course, we were talking not only about serious topics, but also funny ones.










2つ目は仲良し日本人友達と。女性9人うちの家に来ました。女性が9人も集まると何が起こるかか想像できるでしょ。 ただしゃべりまくるだけの楽しい時間( ^)o(^ )
それからプレゼント交換もしました。これがまた超楽しくて、ちょっと怪しい。。。感じだった。
なんでプレゼント交換が怪しかったのか、その理由は言いたくないなあ。。。ちょっと変なものを交換し合ったから(‘;’)
The second one was with some of my close Japanese lady friends. Nine ladies came over. If nine women gather, you can guess what’s going on. We were just talking and having a good time.
We also exchanged gifts. This was really fun but kind of strange. I don’t want to tell you about the reason the gift exchange was strange. We exchanged some special gifts.



3つ目は日本人の友達のおうちのパーティー。彼女のご両親が今ミシガンにこられているので、ご両親のために開催。こんな寒いミシガンの冬の滞在は、大変だろうなあ。。。
その日の気温は華氏6度（摂氏マイナス14度）
The third one was held at my Japanese friend’s house. Her parents are in Michigan right now, so she had the party for them. I felt her parents were having a tough time this cold Michigan winter.
The temperature on that day was 6 degrees F. (-14 degrees C)




最後は、私が日本食レストランで働いていた時の同僚とのパーティー。レストランはすでに閉店してしまったけど。それいらい仲良しの友達関係が続いています。
The last one was with my previous colleagues that I had worked with at a Japanese restaurant. The restaurant had already closed, but we have been close friends since.


パーティー全部、1品お料理持ち寄りだったので、いろんなお料理を食べることができました！！
All of the parties were potluck style, so I had a chance to many different types of delicious foods at all of the parties.

大雪のため、会社お休み 2008年 12月 19日

今日は大雪が降っています。昨日、多くのメディアが今日のこのお天気について言っていたので、こうなることは想定内。いつもより早く会社に向かいました。
上司からの電話がかかってきたとき、ちょうど会社に着いた・・・彼曰く「今日は大雪で、会社休みになりました」・・・・・

It has been snowed heavily today. Many media reported about today’s weather yesterday, so I could guess this situation. I went to my office earlier than usual. When my boss called me up, I just got to my office. He said, “Today’s work is cancelled.”









家を早く出てなかったら、こんな大雪の中運転せんでもよかったのに。。。。。。。。。。
家に戻る間、どっかのカフェでも寄ろうかと考えたけど、どの店の前も雪だらけ。結局、家に直接帰りました。

If I hadn’t left my house earlier, I wouldn’t have to drive in the terrible snowy road. I was wondering if I dropped by a café while I went back to my house; however, there are a lot of snow in front of any stores. I ended up going home directly.

Xmasシーズンはえ～の～ 2008年 12月 18日

今はクリスマスシーズン。たくさんの場所でクリスマスデコレーションを見ることが来ます。いい季節だなあ。日本でも同じでしょ？
It is Xmas season now. We can see a lot of Xmas decorations in many places. They make the season better. Japan has same atmosphere doesn’t it?



私が見た中で良かったデコレーションのうちの1つを紹介。
家の近くのショッピングモールにそれはあります。5つのデパートが入っている、すごくおっきいモールで、私はたまに、そこでブラブラしたり、お茶したりしてます。このﾌﾞﾛｸﾞを読んでくれている日本人の方のために、また今度このモールを紹介するね。
I want to tell you about one of the best decorations I’ve seen.
We can see it at the shopping mall close to my house. The mall is huge. There are 5 department stores there.
I sometimes have a coffee and hung out there. I will you more about this mall in the future for the Japanese readers.

話を元に戻して。。。そのモールのクリスマスデコレーションはすごくきれいです。ツリーだけじゃなくて、ほかの飾りも。子供向けの「サンタクロースと一緒に写真を撮る」サービスもやってました。先週末はその写真待ちの長い列ができてました。
Let’s go back to what I am talking about.
The Xmas decorations there are very beautiful. There are not only Xmas trees, but other decorations. There is also a service to take a picture with Santa Claus for kids. I saw that people who were waiting to take pictures made a long line last weekend.







このモールには冬のバーゲンセールを目当てに行ったのだけど、こんなほのぼのするイベントが見れて良かったです。
I went to this mall for the winter bargain sale last weekend; however, I felt happy seeing such a heartwarming experience.

ちなみにこれは我が家のツリーですが、左の方は私の背よりも高いです。

アメリカ人同僚と「手作り餃子パーティー」 2008年 12月 12日

先週末、会社の同僚を「手作り餃子パーティー」をしました。
餃子の作り方を伝授。
I had a party called " Handmade Gyoza-party" last weekend with my colleagues.
I showed them how to make Gyoza.

2種類の餃子を作ることに！１つは普通の餃子、もう1つは、お肉が食べれない人用の、シーフード餃子です。
みんな、餃子包みにてこずっているように見えたけど、写真のようなとても美味しい餃子ができました！
We made 2 kinds of Gyoza. One of them was the regular Gyozas, and the other was the seafood one for people who don’t like meat.
I seemed hard to wrap Gyozas for some of my colleagues; however, we made delicious ones as in the following pictures.



あと、天津飯と魚のすり身が入ったスープも作りました。
お友達はサラダを持ってきてくれた。
I also made Tenshin-han and Fish-ball soup.
One of my colleague brought salad.



次はどんな日本食を教えようかしらねー。
I am wondering if I can show them any Japanese food.

サンクスギビング後半はニューオーリンズへ！ 2008年 12月 04日

11月28日から30日までニューオーリンズへ旅行に行きました。天気が悪かったけど、ヨーロッパ調の街の雰囲気が、感じよかった。
I went on a trip to New Orleans from Nov. 28th to 30th.It was bad weather there, but the European atmosphere of the town was so comfortable for me.








ニューオーリンズはJAZZ発祥の地として有名。カトリーナというハリケーンが2～3年前にニューオーリンズを壊滅させたけど、音楽の力で徐々に活気を取り戻しているように見えました。
New Orleans is famous as the birthplace of Jazz.　Hurricane Katrina completely devastated New Orleans a couple of years ago, but it seemed that the city had gradually regained vitality with the help of the power of music.

なんと、フレンチクオーターというダウンダウンでは歩きながらお酒を飲んでもよかった！アメリカの厳しい法律の中で、すごく珍しいこと。たくさんの人が歌って踊って飲んで、一晩中大騒ぎ。
Surprisingly, people are allowed to drink alcohol while walking in the downtown called French Quarter.
It sounds uncommon under the strict law in the U. S.
Many people had lots of fun with singing, dancing and drinking all night.








とにかく音楽について紹介すると、私たちはジャズを聴きにニューオーリンズで一番有名な
生バンドのジャズホール「プリザベーションホール」に2日連続で行きました。
おんぼろの建物だけど、それが特別な雰囲気を醸し出してた。すーさんは音楽がすごく好きなので、そこでは幸せそう。。。。お値段は1時間10ドルです。
Anyway, I would like to tell you about music.
We went to Preservation Hall to listen Jazz 2 straight days, which is the most famous hall to play live Jazz in New Orleans,.
That was a dilapidated building, but therefore, we felt a special atmosphere.
Since Su-san liked listening music so much, he was happy when he was there.
The price was $10 per 1 hour.








プリザベーションホールの後は生ライブをしているバーに入ってみた。みんな歌って踊ってた！
After the Preservation Hall, we went to one of the bars where live music was played. A lot of people sang and danced.

それから食べ物について紹介。
この旅行に行く前に、友達が
ニューオーリンズのケージャンフードは、どれもめちゃおいしいよと言ってた。
写真で一挙にご紹介。
And then, let me tell you about the foods.
Before I went this trip, some of my friends told me that any meals called Cajun Cooking in New Orleans were very delicious.
I would like to introduce many dishes with pictures in a scoop.



これはベニエというドーナツみたいなお菓子
This is a picture of Beignet like doughnut.





これはガンボ。野菜とお米とスパイスがきいたスープ。
This is a picture of Gumbo, which is a kind of soup with many vegetables, rice and spice.





これはジャンバラヤオムレツ。ジャンバラヤはシーフードと野菜のピラフみたいな感じ。
This is a picture of Jambalaya omelet, which is made some seafood, rice and vegetables like pilaf.

This is a picture of row oysters.

ごらんの通り、いっぱい食べたので、間違いなく体重増だ。。。
Since I had lots of foods as you can see, I have surely gained my weight.
