こないだアメリカで4度目のTOEICを受けました。日本での受験も合わせたら、もう結構な数、受けてます。(日本で働いてた会社ではTOECIを定期的に受けないといけなかった)
I took the TOEIC test for the 4th time in the US the other day. Including the times taken in Japan, I’ve had a lot of experience taking the TOEIC test. ( Taking the test occasionally was obligation for the workers when I was working at the previous company in Japan)

アメリカで3回目に受けたのは1年半前、それまでで一番スコアはよかったです。私の英語力も前に比べてちょっとはうまくなっているので（と信じたい。。。）
なので、今回のターゲットは、前回よりも高いスコアを取ること。
今回は全くTOEIC用の勉強はしなかったし、それについてそんなに気にもしませんでした。
On the 3rd time a year and a half ago, I got a better score than I had experience. Now that my English had improved a bit　compared with how it had been before ( I wanted to believe), my target this time was of course to get a higher score than the last one.
I didn’t study for “TOEIC English” at all this time, but I didn’t care about it so much.

受験中、そのTOEICのペースについていけてないなあ。。って思いました。
テスト中ずっと心配になって焦ってしまいました。
While I was taking it, I recognized I couldn’t keep up a good pace of TOEIC. So, I kind a felt rushed and anxious throughout the test.

後になってスコアが郵便で送られてきて。。　1年半に取った点数と全くおんなじ。。
私の英語って1年半で全く伸びなし？？ アメリカ人の中で働いてるのに？？
がっかり。。。(‘;’)
Then, I got the score afterwards by mail. It was completely the one I had got a year and a half earlier…
Hasn’t my English imploded within the last year and a half even though I am working at the office with American colleagues??
I was disappointed..(‘;’)

ネイティブスピーカーでない人がTOEICでいい点を取るには、絶対TOEIC用の勉強が必要だと思います。そのTOEIC用の勉強で絶対TOEICハイスコアを取るコツみたいなのがわかります。TOEICの疑似テストみたいなのの数をこなせばこなすほど、だんだん慣れてきます。ペースをつかむことが大切です。
To get a good TOEIC score, I believe you have to study for “TOEIC” if you are not a native speaker. There are definitely some tips for achieving a high score on the TOEIC. The more you try to take fake TOEIC tests, the more you get the hang on it. To keep up the pace is the important thing.

TOEICハイスコアをとることと、英語を上手に話せるという事とは、そんなに関係がないと思うという話も聞くし、私もまあそうは思うけど、日本に戻ってから(来年か？)なんとしても仕事を見つけたい私としては、英語関係のいい仕事につくために、TOEICのハイスコアが必要とされます。日本で英語力の決め手はTOEICのスコアなので、いい点数を取っておくことは私にとっては意味があるのです。
You sometimes say that getting a high TOEIC score doesn’t have anything to do with the fact you can speak English so well. I kind of agree with it. However, I really wanna get a job when I go back to Japan for good ( it might be next year…. ) . To get a good job related to English, a good TOEIC score will be required in Japan. The measure of English skill depends on the score there, so a getting high score is meaningful for my future.

とにかくまあ、今回満足いく結果が出せなかったのは私の問題なので、もっかい準備万端にしてトライしようと思っています。
Anyway, it was my fault that I didn’t get the scored I could be satisfied with, so I will try to take it again and prepare will.

週末日本語漬け生活 2011年 05月 03日

職場での私の英語、月曜日が他の日に比べて下手だと思います。
明らかな理由があって、週末はほとんど日本語しか使わないから。すーさんや日本人の友達と話す、日本のWebを見まくる、お裁縫してる（どんな言葉も発しない、笑）、、、っていう感じ。
My English on Monday at work was worse compared with the other day.
There is one clear reason. On most of the weekends, I use Japanese most of the tie because I just talk with Su-san and Japanese friends, watching Japanese websites, sewing(no need speaking any language haha) and so on.

外に出るにしても、ジムに行くか打ちっぱなしに行くか食料品の買いだしか。。。全部英語を使う必要なし。(今英語のオンラインコースをやっているけど、アメリカ人と会話する形式では無いし)
Even if I go outside, I just go to the gym or to golf range or go grocery shopping. None of them are related to using English. ( I’m taking English online English course, but this doesn’t allow me to communicate with Americans.)

同僚がいつも金曜日に、週末の予定を聞いてきてくれるのだけど、私の答えはいつも
「えっと、特に変わった事はなくって、走るか料理か洋裁・・・って感じ？」
私のこの答えにいつもあきれた様子です。
旅行に行くとき以外はむしろ家がいいのよね～
My colleague always asks me on Friday how I will spend my weekend my answer is always “Nothing special.. I’m gonna run… cooking… sewing….”
He always has an amazed look for my response.
I’d rather stay at home other than running on weekend other than I go on a trip.


土日完璧に日本語漬けの後、特に月曜、英語を使うのが難しいというわけです。
火曜から金曜まで日がたつに連れて、毎週だんだん英語がマシになってきます。英語の上達のことを考えると、週末も英語を使う何かにトライしたほうがいいのかも。
After being in an environment where I am totally immersed in Japanese on Saturday and Sunday, it’s tough to use English , especially on Mondays.
The more the days pass from Tuesday through Friday, the more my English is gets better every week. Ｗhen it comes to thinking about English improvement , I might as well try something using English on weekends.

あ、でも夏はもうすぐそこ。週末の私の楽しみがもう1つありました。昼真っ赤らビールを飲むこと!!　今年も忙しそうだなあ。
あ、知ってる？私の英語、飲むと流暢になるんだった。。。
Oh summer is just around the corner, I have one more fun weekend schedule that I am enjoy. I’ll be drinking beer from the afternoon onwards at home. I will be busy for it this summer as well.
You know ,my English becomes fluent while drinking beer?

英語と日本語の教え合い 2011年 02月 20日

会社では英語を使う機会がたくさんあるにはあるのですが、たまに半分しか人の話を聞いてないとこがあります。本当はしっかり聞かないといけないんだけど、私の英語力ではそれはハードで、時にめんどくさいのです。
で、結局理解するのをあきらめることになります。。
I have many opportunities to use English at work, but I sometimes half-listen. I should always listen carefully, but it’s very hard and sometimes troublesome with my English ability.
I end up giving up trying to understand them.

ランチの時間に、同僚がよく英語のスラングを教えてくれて、たまに悪い言葉を教えてからかわれたりしています。
これに対して、ウイットに富んだジョークでも使って返すことができたらいいんだけどねえ。。
At lunch time, my colleagues often teach me English slang. They sometimes use bad slang on purpose because they poke fun at me.
I wish I could respond them with a witty joke…

私の方も、近くに座ってる同僚たちにちょっとだけ日本語を教えたりしてます。
みんなの日本語お気に入り表現は。。。
I’m also teaching a bit of Japanese to my colleagues who sit around me. Their favorite Japanese expression are
「お腹ぺこぺこ」“Onaka Peko Peko = I’m starving.”
「ちょっといい？」　“Chotto Ii? = Do you have a minute?”
「気にしないで」“Kini- Shinaide= Never mind”
「いい加減にして！」“Ii Kagen ni Shite = Give me a break /You're killing me … like that.

こんなんばっかり教えていいんかいな。。。と思っている今日この頃です。
I’m wondering if it’s okay I teach them such words..

日常使われる英語の難しいことったら。。。 2010年 07月 08日

いつもの私の口癖「英語の勉強は難しい。。。」
アメリカ人が実際によく使う表現法や言葉は日本の教科書に載っているものとホントに違う。
多くの人が日本で習う文法中心の英語の勉強法は間違っていると感じているようだけど、私もそれには賛成で、私は中学・高校では殆どリスニングやスピーキングは勉強しなかった。
I always say “Learning English is difficult…”.
Many expressions, idiom and words that Americans actually use are much different from the ones in Japanese textbooks.
Many people feel that the way to learn English in Japan is wrong because the main focus is English grammar usage.
I agree with it, I didn’t study listening and speaking so much when I was in junior high and high school.

会話力の上達のために、英語を話す機会をたくさん作ることは言うまでもないけれど、アメリカ人が普段使う本場の英語をもっと勉強する必要があると思う。日本であっても、もっと自然な英語を習うべき。
To get conversation skills, we need to study more real English that Americans usually use, not to mention having many opportunities to speak English.
We should learn more natural English even in Japan.

簡単な例では例えば、学校では初めての人に会ったときに使う挨拶として“How do you do?はじめまして”を習ったけど、アメリカで今までに”How do you do?”を使っているのは聞いたことがない。普通は”Nice to meet you?.”
”How do you do?”はイギリスで使われてるのかなあ。。。
Let me explain with simple example. We already learned “How do you do?” at school as the sentence that people first meet each other, but I never heard people use “How do you do?”so far in the US.
They usually use “Nice to meet you”. I’m wondering if “How do you do?” is using mainly in England…

英語で美栗したことの１つは日常会話の中で、熟語がめちゃめちゃ使われること。アメリカ人は同じ意味でも、１つの単語を使うより、簡単な単語（Get とかMakeとか Comeとか）と前置詞を組み合わせた熟語をよく使う。
例えば“Get on”, ”Get off”, ”Make sure”, “Come over”..etc..
いっぱいありすぎて、全部覚えるのはすごく大変!
One of the surprising things about English is there are many idioms used in daily conversation! Americans prefer to use idioms which connect easy words with prepositions rather than using just one word. They often use easy words like “Get”,”Make”,”Come”, and so on.
For instance, “Get on”, ”Get off”, ”Make sure”, “Come over”..etc..
It’s really hard to remember all of them because there are too many idioms to remember!

私は単語力があればある程、英語のスキルも伸びると思う。会話力をUPするためには、同時に熟語勉強すべき。
がんばろー！！
I believe that the more vocabulary skills we have, the earlier the English skill is improved. In the meantime, we should study using idioms, if we want our conversation skill to improve.

英語上達に、まだまだ難関山盛り 2009年 11月 20日

英語と日本語のバイリンガルの人たちは2つの言葉を簡単に切り替えることができます。私にはまた無理だけど。。
Many Japanese and English bilingual people can switch immediately between Japanese and English. I still cannot do it though.

私のオフィスの机は、英語とスペイン語のバイリンガルの、プエルトリコ人の女性が前で（プエルトリコの母国語はスペイン語）、スペイン語がしゃべれる男の人が隣。
I sit in front of Puerto Rican woman who can speak Spanish and English fluently (Puerto Rico’s first language is Spanish.) and next to an American guy who can speak Spanish in my office.

前の席の彼女は普通は英語を話してるんだけど、スペイン語のお客さんから電話がかかってきたら、スペイン語に切り替える。
隣の彼も彼女の会話は理解できでます。
彼女はめちゃくちゃよくしゃべる人で、私って英語よりむしろスペイン語のほうがいつも聞いてるんじゃないかしら。。。
The woman in front of me always uses English, but once a customer who speaks Spanish calls her, she switches to Spanish.
The guy next to me also understands her conversation.
The woman is VERY talkative, so I always listen to Spanish rather than English.

時々私にスペイン語の単語を教えてくれるけど、私はいまだ英語勉強中の身なので、非常に複雑だ。私の英語は働くのには全く十分でない！！
これを機会にトリリンガルを目指すか！　無理にきまってるけど、、、
Sometimes they try to teach me Spanish words. However, it’s very complicated for me because I’m still studying English. My English is not good enough to work at all!
I try to be trilingual in these cases! IMPOSSINBLE though…

ところで、アメリカ人の友達が言うには私の英語にはアクセントに問題があるとのこと。発音ではなくアクセント。
それを初めに聞いたとき、彼らが何を言っているのかわからなかった。
By the way, my American friends said me English has an accent problem. It’s not pronunciation, but the ACCENT.
When I first heard it, I didn’t understand what they were saying.

日本人は日本語英語の発音で英語を話すことが多くて（例えばアイアム　リビング　イン　アン　アパートメント. (正しくは、アイム　リビンギンナ　パートメンみたいな感じか。。)　
Japanese people often use Japanese English pronunciation, such as “I am living in an apartment. ”アイアム　リビング　イン　アン　アパートメント.
(Correct pronunciation is like アイム　リビンギンナ　パートメン）

今私は言いたいのは、この発音のことじゃなくて、アクセントの問題。
どうやら私の英語は「大阪弁アクセント」らしい。
What I wanna say right now is that the problem is not pronunciation, but it’s the English ACCENT problem.
Apparently, my English has an Osaka-ben accent…

どれだけ発音に気をつけても、大阪弁アクセントは直せず。。。
なんてこった。しょうがないけど。。。。。
私の大阪弁は人よりきついし。。
ま、いいけど。
No matter how much I care about pronunciation, Osaka-ben accent cannot be fixed……
Junk! It can’t be helped though….
My Osaka-ben is so strong among people who speak Osaka-ben.
Oh well….

2回目TOEICはヘコむ材料満載 2009年 06月 25日

先月1つ落ち込んだことがあって、それはTOEICの結果なんだけど。。。
One thing disappointed me last month. That was my TOEIC result.(TOEIC: Test of English for International Communication)

前にこのブログに書いたけど、去年の11月にアメリカでの初TOEICを受けた。その時の点数は日本にいた時よりもめちゃめちゃUP。そして今回が2回目。
で、こないだの点数は私の期待に反して11月のとほぼ同じ。。日本の時から考えるとぜいたくな悩みかもしれないけど。。。
As I had mentioned this blog before, I took the first TOEIC in the US last November. The score was much higher than the one I had gotten in Japan. And then, I tried it again a month ago.
The latest score was similar to the one from November. That was far beyond my expectations. This might be an envious dilemma comparing the score I got in Japan though……

私は英語をできるだけ頑張って勉強して、たくさんのアメリカ人に囲まれて今会社で働いている。なので、コミュニケーションに関しては多分上達したと思うけど、TOEICスコアは変わらなーい。
I have been studying English as much as I can. I’m working at the office among many American employees while taking English classes. Although my communication skill might have improved, my TOEIC score was plateaued.

多分、TOEICのスコアが良くならない理由のうちの1つに性格の問題があるな。
私はとにかく気が散るタイプ。本読み(日本の本も)大嫌い(+o+)、人の話きかない（日本語でも）(＠_＠;)。おしゃべりは好きだけど(；一_一)
Probably, one of the reasons I can’t get a good TOEIC score is because of my personality…… I always get distracted. I hate reading(even Japanese books). I don’t like listening( even to Japanese) I like taking though……….

今回一緒にTOEICを受けに行った友達は私より100点上の点数をGET。彼女は聞き上手で、読書と映画鑑賞が好き。とても頭がいいです。
A friend of mine who took the TOEIC with me this time got about 100 points higher than mine. She is a good-listener, and she likes reading and watching English movies. She is smart!!!

んなこと言っても、私の性格は私の性格なんだから、そりゃどうしようもないわ！！
英語上達に向けてはまだまだいっぱい問題あり。とにかくただ１つできることは、もっと頑張ることだな。
Anyway, my personality is my personality. It can’t be helped.
There are still many problems trying to improve my English ability. So, the only thing I can do is to try harder.

英語上達のためのプラン 2009年 05月 11日

ここミシガンにきて約2年がたちます。ここに来る前アメリカにすんだら勝手に英語が上達すると思っていました。でもそれは大きな間違い。アメリカでの始めの1年間は、その時の自分の期待する英語力にならず、落ち込むばかり。。。ここにきてからずっと英語のカレッジに通っているけど、英語は、想像していたものとはかけ離れてまったく上達しない。。
I ‘ve been here for almost two years. Before I moved here, I thought that as long as I lived in the U.S., I’m automatically able to speak English. But, it was totally wrong. During the 1st year in the U.S., I was disappointed due to my expectations for what I expected my English ability to be at that time. Although I have been studying English at a college since I ‘ve been here , my English hasn’t improved as much as I imagined it would when I was in Japan.

何度もあきらめたけど、ホントについ最近になって気づいた。
「英語は思ってたほど簡単には上達せん！上達には長い時間がかかる!」そう気がついてから、英語勉強プランをやっとたてました。今はカレッジでESLクラス（第2言語としての英語）として、英語を勉強しています。ESLは、英語が母国語でない外国人のためのクラス。
I gave up on studying English many times. I’ve only just recently recognized that it’s not as easy as I thought to improve my English ability. Also, I think that it takes a long time to get it. After I realized it, I made an English studying plan. I am taking as ESL(English as a Second Language) class at my college. ESL is an English class for international students.

ESLを終了したら、一般の英語のクラスに行きたいと思っています。一般の英語のクラスというのは、外国人のためのクラスじゃなく、英語が母国語の生徒も受けるクラス。一般の英語のクラスにはいろいろな部門があります。例えば、作文、スピーチ、ビジネス英語、、、などなど。
一般クラスに行って難しい授業に耐えれるのかしら。。。
I hope that I go on a regular English class after I finish all of the ESL classes. Regular English class means, not only for international student, but for native speakers. There are many categories in the regular English classes, such as composition, speech, business English and so on. I am wondering if I can put up with the difficult classes even when I go on to the regular classes…

クラスメートのアート 2009年 05月 05日

最近いろんなことがわかってびっくりさせられる、そして思うのは
「ひやー世界にはいろんな芸術があるのーーーー」
今日紹介するのは、私のスピーチのクラス中、クラスの中の課題でクラスメートが紹介したもの。
I recently found out about many things. I was amazed. I always think, “ There are many pieces of arts in the world!”
Both pieces of arts I introduced today were my classmates told us about in their class activity in my speech class.


はじめは一種のボディペインティング。
写真見てわかるように、インド人のクラスメートが、他のクラスメートに何やら書いてます。書いてる間、みんなが周りに集まって、その芸術に見入ってました。
One on them was the kind of “body painting”.
As you can see in the picture, she, who is from India, drew the picture of another classmate hand. While painting, other classmates gathered around her and stared at her artifice.


すごくない？これを15分以内で完成させました。
これは有名なインドの芸術らしくお祝いのときなんかに使われるらしい。
Can you imagine?
She was able to complete this piece in only 15 minutes.
She said that this was a famous Indian art form, and they were often painted in the celebration party.



これはインド人なら誰でもできるのか？絶対違う！これは彼女のスペシャルな技術なのです。ブラボー！
Can all Indians make these kinds of painting???? Definitely “No”. That’s her special technique.



もうひとつは、「ペイント卵」写真見てください。
中身はゆで卵です。かわいくて食べれないわ。
The other is a “Painting eggs”. Let’s look at this picture.
These eggs were boiled eggs.
They were too cute to eat.






この日は、ブラジル人クラスメートもブラジルのカーニバルの紹介をしました。
プレゼン中、ダンスを披露し、笑いこけました。
私は人前でこれはできんなあ。。。
On this day, another Brazilian classmate also introduced a carnival in Brazil.
During the presentation, she showed a dance, and we laughed hard.
I couldn’t do that kind of performance in front of them………….

「説得」スピーチ 2009年 02月 28日

先週土曜は、学校のスピーチクラスでプレゼンでした。トピックは「説得させること」
この「説得」スピーチは、アメリカではよくあるトピックらしい。
I gave a presentation in the speech class last Saturday. The topic was "Persuasive". This topic seems to be popular as a speech topic in the US.

私は「日本の英語教育」という題で、このプレゼンに臨んだ。。。。
クラスメートはみんな、はきはき明瞭に話していくけど、私は暗記もできず。。。自信全くなし。。。
I chose "English Education System in Japan" as me speech topic.
All classmates gave their speech clearly and briskly, but I han’t memorized it by heart by the day. I had no confidence in giving the speech.

いやあ、とにかく終わった終わった。
Anyway, I finished the speech.

Persuasive

私の英語はTUTORのおかげです。 2009年 02月 11日

私は個人の英語の先生にも習っています。ま、彼は友達なんだけど、週1で英語を教えてもらっています。といっても、1時間半フリートークをしているのみ。
私がしゃべっている間、彼は私の英語をチェックして全てのミスを直していってくれます。
どんなミスも見逃しはりません((+_+))　冠詞（aとかthe）や前置詞（inやonやforなど)まで。
I have a tutor, and also he is a friend. He teaches me English one a week. we talk freely in English an hour and half. As I speak, he checks my English and corrects all of my English mistakes. He doesn’t miss any mistakes even articles and prepositions.


間違ったら、正解をどんどんノートに書いて行ってくれます。
もし私が言った文章自体に文法の間違いがなかったとしても、アメリカ人が使わないようなものは、正しい表現に直してくれます。
Whenever I make mistakes, I write down the corrections.
Also, even if the sentences I use have no mistake but if they sound strange for American people, he tells me the accurate was to say them.

彼は実は前に日本に住んでたので日本語ができるんだけど、アメリカに帰って来てから本当に日本語を話さなくなったようで、今また日本語を勉強中らしい。
私の英語より彼の日本語の方がうまいと、私は思うけど、あっちは逆だと言う。
2人とも完璧なバイリンガルを目指してます。
He can speak Japanese because he lived in Japan before but he hasn’t been really used Japanese since he came back to the US, so he studies Japanese now. I think that his Japanese is better than my English, but he doesn’t think so. We both aim to become completely bilingual!
