I am sometimes asked my friends who I’m working even though I’m here as a wife whose husband had transferred from Japan.
The reason I’m working is because I like working. Also, I’m not cut out for a housewife. Because of no kids, I probably think this way.
Of course, I want to earn money by working and this is the one of the clear reasons.

When I first came here 4 and half years ago after I had quit my job in Japan, I didn’t know what I would do in the US. Then, I figured out that I needed to work.

I’s had a sales background in Japan, so I ‘d wanted to get the same type of job here. But at the same time, I recognized that getting a sales related job with American people at an office would be nearly impossible due to my poor English skill.
In first year in Michigan, I spent most of the time doing to a college to study English.

After 1 year, I registered with some recruiting agencies. I did interviews as a worker at some sales divisions, but I failed all of them.
One of them introduced me to one job as a part time engineering assistant. It was totally not my field, but I was okay as long as I could get a job. Also , since I was still going to college at the time, the part time job was probably ideal. Finally I could get that job.

The work done as the part time engineering assistant was not what I wanted to do, (Please don’t misunderstand; I did not say the engineering job was not good)
After a year, I was dying to do something similar to what I was doing in Japan.
Coincidently, the next department which is the Sales department, had an open position that was similar to what I’d done in Japan. Fortunately, the sales boss made time to discuss it with me. Finally, I was transferred to the sales division about two years ago.

The sales job was very difficult because of my poor English ability at that time, I dropped the ball a lot and was disappointed many times.
I thought I didn’t stand a change with anything with my poor English. I also thought that even though I had lots of experience in Japan, it was all for nothing because I couldn’t speak English well.

However, with my boss’s help, I was able to get confidence bit by bit. ( My boss didn’t give up training to me at all, although I was about to give up myself. I appreciate her. ) After I became a bit more confident, I started to use my past experience property in my new position.

My English is totally not good enough (Seriously!) for doing all tasks I have. I always need someone’s help.
Then, I recognized I should tell the American workers my situation that I am having trouble with something. I shouldn’t have to always say “Yes” and pretend to understand. It’s important to ask about what I cannot understand.
I think I am somehow pulling my own weight now.

For trying to do for what we want, we will definitely need family’s helps, and I don’t think we should put our hope ahead of our family’s needs. However, if you get a chance and you can try something in the US without any trouble, you should try it and see.
Nothing is going to happen unless you make it happen.
